Genres and Generic Conventions (G321)

When we watch films we expect to see certain things and these things we expect change with the genre of film were watching. These things are called generic conventions.
Horror
For example when watching a horror film we expect things such as: blood, and antagonist, a murder, and a mysterious setting, tense suspesnse building music, screaming, and 'jumpy, heartbeat skipping' moments. Action
However when watching an action film our expections are different instead we expect to see things like: violence, antagonists and protagonists, fast cuts, a chase, guns, fight scenes, an attractive female, dramatic music, the lead character is a male.
Thriller
Despite being vaguley similar to action films our expaectations are different in thrillers as we expect to see: a chase, dramatic music, suspense building music, a wepon and 'jumpy, heartbeat skipping' moments.
Comedy
Comared to the genres above our expections are completely different as we expect things such as: slapstic humour, things that will make you laugh, attractive girl often used, gags (jokes), inuendos and relatable characters.
(the following extract contains 1 use of offensive language) Rom Com
Our expectations for a rom-com are similar but we do expect other things also i.e: inuendos, relationship, guy meets girl, girl meets guy, to feel empathy and/or sympathy to characters, love and a happy ending
Drama
However in a drama we expect: a realistic storyline, to feel sympathy to characters, realistic scenario, an antagonist and real life issues being adressed in the film.
Sci-Fi
Our expectations in a sci-fi film are totally different to the above as we expect to see: space, supernartural, lasers, life on another planet, futuristic battles and a futuristic setting.
Documentry
However our expectations for a documetory are totally different to the above as we expect: a voiceover, based around one person or event, non fiction and dates of specific events.
