Why Remake An Opening Sequence (G321)

Our group have chosen to recreate the opening sequence of Forest Gump as we feel that it will challenge and test our abilities with the camera and will also test our editing abilities. We all found it interesting how the opening sequence was done in one fluent shot which we all believed that it  would be rather demanding to recreate this unique sequence but we also believed that it would help improve our camera techniques as the camera movement is completley different to the camera movement which featured in our premliminary task.

Genres and Generic Conventions (G321)

When we watch films we expect to see certain things and these things we expect change with the genre of film were watching. These things are called generic conventions.
Horror
For example when watching a horror film we expect things such as: blood, and antagonist, a murder, and a mysterious setting, tense suspesnse building music, screaming, and 'jumpy, heartbeat skipping' moments. Action
However when watching an action film our expections are different instead we expect to see things like: violence, antagonists and protagonists, fast cuts, a chase, guns, fight scenes, an attractive female, dramatic music, the lead character is a male.
Thriller
Despite being vaguley similar to action films our expaectations are different in thrillers as we expect to see: a chase, dramatic music, suspense building music, a wepon and 'jumpy, heartbeat skipping' moments.
Comedy
Comared to the genres above our expections are completely different as we expect things such as: slapstic humour, things that will make you laugh, attractive girl often used, gags (jokes), inuendos and relatable characters.
(the following extract contains 1 use of offensive language) Rom Com
Our expectations for a rom-com are similar but we do expect other things also i.e: inuendos, relationship, guy meets girl, girl meets guy, to feel empathy and/or sympathy to characters, love and a happy ending
Drama
However in a drama we expect: a realistic storyline, to feel sympathy to characters, realistic scenario, an antagonist and real life issues being adressed in the film.
Sci-Fi
Our expectations in a sci-fi film are totally different to the above as we expect to see: space, supernartural, lasers, life on another planet, futuristic battles and a futuristic setting.
Documentry
However our expectations for a documetory are totally different to the above as we expect: a voiceover, based around one person or event, non fiction and dates of specific events.

Student Film Analysis -- The Edge (G321)

In this student film opening sequence we know that the film is an Action/Thriller (a hybrid). This is because we see generic convection's which can be linked to both action and thriller. Examples of these generic convection's are the on-going chase and the gun. Other more suttle convection's include the men in suits which can be loosely linked to the Mafia or 'Mob'.
Many fast cuts are used. This is something which we expect to see in an Action/Thriller films as fast cuts are always used in high adrenaline scenes in Thriller/Action movies.
In this opening sequence a variety of different camera angles are used. This is a good thing as it keeps the audience engaged in the action on screen.
The soundtrack is integrated perfectly with the on-screen action. It starts of calm when nothing serious is going down. Then when the antagonists appear the soundtrack picks up a notch, this allerts us that something is going to happen. And then when the antagonists and protagonists make eye contact the music picks up dramaticly. This connotes that something big is happening/ is going to happen.
In this opening sequence we see that the antagonists are wearing suits. This connotes that these antagonists are part of a specialized organisation, hence where i got my earlier 'Mafia' link from. We also see that the teenage protagonist is wearing casual clothing connoting to him just being a mischievous teenager
In this film we know that there is one teenage male protagonist and two adult male antagonists. We know this because these are characters we see when watching this student film opening.
In this student film the titles are integrated with the onscreen action fantastically to the point where they don't impose themselves onscreen but are still noticeable and clear. Also the titles are correctly placed in terms of the way which they're are ordered.

Student Film Analysis -- The Disappearance (G321)

The genre of this student film is a thriller. We know this because there is a chase in the opening sequence to this student film, Sespite being a chase that is low in adrenaline compared to other thrillers we know this student film is a thriller because a chase is generic convection of a thriller.
We know that in this student film there is a woman who plays the victim. We also know that there is a male antagonist in this student film. We only know of these to characters because they are the only two characters who feature in this opening. In this student film the antagonist wears dark clothing this has connotations of his dark medsterious character
Stundent film doesn't feature many fast cuts. This is common in thrillers which do not begin with a high adrenaline chase or fight scene. A voice over is used to set the theme of the student film. This is because she says she is a fighter, this combined with the fact that she is running from someone tells us that this thriller is about someone trying to evade someone. One of the two things which 'bugs' me in this opening sequence is the poor match on action where we see a two shot of the woman with the man approaching in the background, then we cut to the mans point of veiw and back to the two shot which starts on the same frame as which we left it. The music used in this student film builds up tension which is also another indication of this film being a thriller.
In this student film a variety of camera angles are used. For example there are tracking  mid shots on the upper and/or ower body of the woman and the male antagonist tracking their movememt, this is done to amplify the distance traveled by the woman. Long shots are also used to amplify the distance traveled by the woman. Another angle used is a handheld shot, this angle is used to give us the view point of the antagonist.
The titles in this clip are not intergrated with whats going on onscreen. Instead they are intigrated with the voiceover. The order of the titles is the other main thing that 'bugs' me about this student film. This is becaues the titles are in the wrong order. Evidence of this is that the director is always the last title in a opening sequence, however in this film it is the third title we see.
